The Department of Mathematics of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) invites applications for tenure-track faculty positions at all ranks in all areas of mathematics, including statistics, applied mathematics and pure mathematics.

Applicants should have a PhD degree and strong experience in research and teaching. Applicants with exceptionally strong qualifications and experience in research and teaching may be considered for positions above the Assistant Professor rank.

HKUST is a world class research institution. It is ranked ninth in Asia by 2022 QS World University ranking and 34 in the world. The Department of Mathematics has a strong reputation as a top research mathematics department. Lecturer I/II Recruitment (closed)

Lecturer I/II in Mathematics (Duration: 1-2 years, renewable)

The Department of Mathematics at HKUST is seeking a high caliber person for Lecture I/II position in the Department.

Duties: The appointee is expected to teach undergraduate mathematics courses in actuarial science, assist in adminstration and development of the actuarial science program, provide academic counseling for students, and perform any other academic and administrative duties as required.

Requirements: Applicants should have a PhD degree. Teaching experience in tertiary institutions and knowledge in actuarial science are preferred. Postdoctoral Fellows Recruitment (closed)

Postdoctoral Fellows in Mathematics (2014-2015)

The Department of Mathematics invites applications for 2-year and 3-year non-tenure track Postdoc positions beginning Fall 2014. Applicants should be PhD recipients in their early stage of research career with outstanding research potential. Positions are avilable in the area of pure mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, probability and financial mathematics. Preference will be given to research areas matching that of a faculty.

Duties: The appointees will teach and undertake research. The teaching load is three courses per academic year.

Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits including annual leave, medical and dental benefits will be provided.

Teaching Associates in Mathematics (Duration: 1 year, renewable)

The Department of Mathematics invites applications for the position of teaching associate.

Duties: To be the operational officer of the Mathematics Support Center (MSC); to be able to work well and manage a group of Instructional Assistants and other MSC personnel; to teach undergraduate mathematics courses or related courses in English and to perform any other academic and administrative duties as required.

Requirements: A PhD degree is required. Supervision and teaching experiences are preferred.

Initial contract will be for one year. Salary will depend on qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits include medical/dental benefits and annual leave.

Instructional Assistants Recruitment

Full-time Instructional Assistant in Mathematics (One post; Duration: 1 year, renewable)

The Department of Mathematics at HKUST is seeking high caliber persons for position of Full-time Instructional Assistant.

Duties: To conduct undergraduate mathematics tutorials in English, to help design online mathematics course with use of MATLAB, and to perform any other academic and administrative duties as required.

Requirements: A bachelor's degree or above in Mathematics or related discipline, preferably with teaching experiences. Knowledge in use of MATLAB is a must.

Education Development Officers Recruitment (closed)

Education Development Officers in Mathematics (Duration: 1 year, renewable)

Two openings

(1) Education Development Officer (Programming)
Duties: The Department of Mathematics is implementing a web-based e-Learning system for common core mathematics courses at HKUST. Approximately ten thousand mathematics articles in LaTeX formats will be required to incorporate into a MySQL databse management system to form a knowledge-based back-end of the e-Learning system. Besides the back-end database, the system also requires building up a highly interactive web based GUI. Open source content management systems such as Drupal may serve as the backbone of the system.

Requirements: A bachelor's degree or above in Computer Science or related discipline with at least 2 years of post-qualification work experience in web project management and web application development under the LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) environment. Solid experience in PHP, MySQL, JavaScript, AJAX, HTML & CSS. Proficiency with strong database schema design and best database practices. Experience in web-based e-Learning system is an advantage. knowledge in MathJax, LaTeX, TikZ and Drupal will be a further bonus. Applicants should also have good command of spoken and written English and Chinese.

(2) Education Development Officer (IT Support)
Duties: The Department of Mathematics is deploying various computer technologies to enhance the teaching quality. The appointee will provide front-end technical support which includes computer hardware and software for faculty members, the administrative staff and educational laboratories operated by the department. Wed application development with ASP/PHP/CMS will also be required.

Requirements: Applicants should have a bachelor's degree preferably in information technology or computer science with at least one year's working experience in front-end computer support related works. Solid knowledge and experience in Microsoft Windows 7/8, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Server, Linux, Apache are required. Substantial background in PC hardware is also essential. Knowledge and experience in CMS will be an added advantage. Applicants should also have good command of spoken and written English and Chinese. Weel-developed interpersonal and communication skill are also necessary.




Salary for the two posts will depend on qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits include medical/dental benefits and annual leave.
